Ontario Retail Industry: A Strategy for the 21st Century

The Ontario Retail Sector Strategy Board and Wendy Evans Centre for the Study of Commercial Activity, Ryerson Polytechnic University, 1994

This report summarizes the vision, goals and recommendations that were developed over the period of a year with the objective of improving competitiveness of the Retail Sector in Ontario. Over eighty dedicated members of the retail sector participated in the development of this strategy and the result is a wealth of ideas, both far-sighted and pragmatic to achieve the vision and goals. Industry stakeholders included retailers, both large and small, labour, government, academia, consumer representatives, associations, developers and consultants.

This Strategic Plan is about managing major and rapid change and doing business profitably in a socially responsible manner in the new retail economy.

The Strategy and recommendations focus on eight themes: infrastructure to support retailers, increased retail-specific research, communication and marketing, retail-specific education and training, innovation through retail leadership, adoption of critical technologies, skilled human resources, and better and effective use of data.
